On Friday 1st December, 120 primary school students took part in a dodgeball tournament at the Eileen Ash Sports Hall, situated at Hewett Academy in Norwich.

The event involved pupils from Years 5 and 6 from six primary schools across Norfolk and East Suffolk; Charles Darwin Primary, Cobholm Primary Academy, Diamond Academy, Great Yarmouth Primary Academy, Norwich Primary Academy, and Stradbroke Primary Academy. This is part of the Trust-wide Primary Sports Competition, which also includes events in football and athletics.

Upon arrival, participants were escorted to their school base for the day. Team photographs were taken to be framed and sent to the schools to recognise the pupils taking part. Following the tournament briefing, the dodgeball frenzy began! The event consisted of a round-robin tournament with teams of 10 pupils consisting of 5 girls and 5 boys from each Year group. There were four dodgeball courts running simultaneously. Each court was supported by four Hewett Academy sports leaders.

The action was fast and furious. Witnessing the speed, quickness and agility of the participants was quite literally breath-taking. To avoid being hit, players were ducking, bobbing, spinning and jumping, with the occasional dive thrown in for good measure. Each dodgeball match was played over a series of 5 games. Year group results can be seen in the table below:

Paul Wayman, Inspiration Trust Sports Coordinator said:

“Wow, what a really fun event to be part of today. Promoting the sporting value of Integrity, encouraged the children involved to play fairly and to treat their peers in a respectful manner. It was only right to celebrate and award the best attitude trophies alongside player of the tournament trophies. The students and staff were brilliant. They played enthusiastically and demonstrated admirable sportsmanship. They should all be very proud of their efforts today.

A special mention must also go out to the fantastic sports leaders from Hewett Academy, who refereed, kept scores and facilitated the smooth running of the event. Also, our appreciation goes to Thomas Paine Sixth Form students who oversaw the tournament in terms of timekeeping and scoring.”
